With the rising cost of health insurance these days, many are beginning to wonder if getting it is really necessary. Many young people are looking at the cost, looking at their health, and wondering why in the world they should be expected to shell out that sort of money for something they would rather not have to use, anyways.
As it turns out, this kind of thinking is dangerous, and leaves many just one small accident away from a financial or, even worth, health disaster that will effect them the rest of their lives.
You see, health insurance isn’t just for old people who need constant medical attention as they age. It isn’t just for families with little children. Young, single people are at just as at risk for unexpected medical conditions as anyone else. Even if your lifestyle is perfectly healthy and safe, unknown genetic conditions or unexpected accidents could leave you in dire straights in very short notice. If you’re not protected, you could face a serious uphill battle to clean up the aftermath.
Not convinced? Imagine this scenario. You’re driving home with some friends after a fun night out. All of a sudden, a drunk driver hits your car. You and your friends survive, but you need immediate care from the hospital due to internal injuries. If you don’t have health insurance, you can still get treatment and go on to live a normal life, but you will find yourself suddenly saddled with tremendous debt. This debt will cost you many times more than the insurance ever would have.
Catastrophic accidents are not the only reason to have health insurance. No matter how healthy your lifestyle, you can still catch the odd sickness. If you’re uninsured, you’ll be likely to just try to recover on your own, which isn’t a bad thing, most of the time. However, there are certain illnesses that can seem mundane at first, but prove deadly if left untreated. If you’re not insured, you’ll be unlikely to visit a doctor and have these checked out. Don’t play games with your life, visit the doctor!
So, I hope this gives you some idea of why you want to get health insurance at all costs. As a young person, its easy to be complacent and try to save many by cutting it out, but by doing this, you are gambling with your future and, indeed, your life. It may be pricey, but the cost is always worth it.
